Advanced Korean Grammar 거니와

I stated on my livejournal that I was going to start reviewing some grammar patterns from the book “Korean Grammar Practice for Foreigners” so if you want to see the lesson for 거늘 click here

거니와- This ending pretty much has the same meaning as 뿐만 아니라( not only but also)
and it is used with 도  for emphasis.

Book example:
상사는 부하를 인격적으로 대해야 하거니와 업무 수행에 대해서도 정당한 평가를 해 줘어야 한다.
Not only does a superior need to treat subordinate with dignity, but he must also give fair evaluation when it comes to work performance.

My examples:
권진아가 심사외원들에게서  큰 그 칭찬을 많이 받고있거니와 시청자들 중에서 인기도 많다 .
Not only is Kwon Jinah receiving praise from the judges but she is also really popular amongst viewers.
아이돌로서 성공하려면 외모가 좋아야 하거니와 재능도 있어야 한다.
If you want to be successful as a idol you have to not only be good looking but you also have to be talented.
그 학생은 매일 학교에 지각하거니와  교복도 안 입어요.
Not only does that student come to school late everyday but he also doesn’t come in uniform.

Translation Practice: Akdong Musician- 작은 별 (Little Star)

Here’s another one of my favorites off of AKMU’s new album. I like how they are promoting their predebut songs as well as some new songs. It show’s their growth as well as their authenticity about their music. I’m sure a lot a people were worried that YG was going to warp them into god know’s what.

밤 중 어딘가 소녀의 기도 소리가 들려오면
If you hear the sound of a girl praying at night
그건 작은 별의 잠꼬대일 거야
that will be a little star sleep talking
밤 중 어딘가 소년의 고백소리가 들려오면
If you hear the sound of a boy confessing
그건 작은 별의 뒤척임일 거야
That will be a little star tossing and turning

가끔 밤하늘을 보면
Sometimes when you look at the night sky
평소에는 보이지 않던 같은 모양의 빛깔이 떠다니지
Colors with the same shape you don’t usually see drift by

저게 인공위성일까 별이었으면 좋겠다
Is that a satellite? I wish it were a star.
눈에 안 보일 뿐이지 별은 사라지지 않아
You just can’t see it with your eyes. The stars don’t disappear.
나이를 먹은 하늘 눈이 침침할 뿐이야
It’s just that sky is old so it’s eyes are blurry
여전히 별은 빛난대
The stars shine like they have always done.

반짝반짝 작은 별님 날 조금만 비춰주세요
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, please shine on me.
이제 어때 좀 봐줄 만은 한가요
How about now? Do I look okay?
동쪽 하늘 서쪽 하늘 둘러보면 모든 하늘은 그렇게
Eastern sky western sky if you look around
날 향해 있다죠
the sky everywhere is facing me.

Please let my star rise on your night
Please let my star rise on your night
Please let my star rise on your night
Please let my star rise on your night

별님 아름다운 별님 나도 어쩌면 별님처럼 빛이 될 수 있나요
Star, Beautiful Star, can I become a star like you somehow?
나도 누군가의 별이 될 수 있을까
Could I become someone’s star?
별님 아름다운 별님 될 수만 있다면 나도 빛을 내어
Star, Beautiful star if it’s possible I want to shine
누군가를 바라보는 작은 별이 되고 싶네요
and become a little star that somebody will look at too.

반짝반짝 작은 별님 날 조금만 비춰주세요
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, please shine on me.
이제 어때 좀 봐줄 만은 한가요
How about now? Do I look okay?
동쪽 하늘 서쪽 하늘 둘러보면 모든 하늘은 그렇게
Eastern sky, western sky if you look around
날 향해 있다죠
the sky everywhere is facing me.

Akdong Muscian 얼음들 (Melted) Translation Practice

Akdong Musician’s first album Play was digitally released the other day. I didn’t watch Kpop Star Season 2 as avidly as I’m watching season 3 so I only a couple performances of them here and there but I saw their performance on the semi finals yesterday and I was blown away by 얼음들. The song is so haunting and beautiful. It’s one of those songs you just love at first listen. You turn it on and you’re like this is good and then it keeps getting better and better. I think they’re going to have four title songs 200%, 얼음들 and the other two are going to chosen by fans?? Member Lee Chan Hyuk participated in writing all of the songs on the album. It says that he helped in the arrangement of 얼음들 as well so I’m really impressed.

Translation note: The English title that was chosen was “Melted” but 얼음들 means “ice” (plural). Another thing to note is that in Korean 얼음들 sounds like 어른들 (adults). I was listening to the song on youtube and reading the Korean comments and I was like “oh yeah it does”. So the lyrics have a dual meaning which adds to the lyrical genius of Lee Chan Hyuk. I think this song is about how the world seems to get colder as one gets older and sadly you actually begin get colder as well.

붉은 해가 세수하던 파란 바다 검게 물들고.
The blue sea the crimson sun used cleanse with is turning black
구름 비바람 오가던 하얀 하늘 회색 빛들고
and the clear sky where the storm of clouds used to pass over shines gray
맘속에 찾아온 어둠을 그대로 두고**
leaving the darkness in that crept into your heart as is
밤을 덮은 차가운 그림자마냥 굳어간다
and freezing like the cold shadows that cover the night.

얼음들이 녹아지면
If the ice gets melted,
조금 더 따뜻한 노래가 나올텐데
a song that was a little more warmer would be able to come out.
얼음들은 왜 그렇게 차가울까
Why is the ice so cold?
차가울까요**
Why are you so cold?

Why are they so cold
Why are they so cold
Why are they so cold
Why are they so cold

붉은 해가 세수하던 파란 바다
Inside blue sea that the crimson sun used to cleanse with
그 깊이 묻힌 옛 온기를 바라본다
I’m looking at the warmth from long ago buried deep inside.
too late get it out
too late get it out
어른들 세상 추위도 풀렸으면 해
I wish that the coldness inside the adult world would melt away too.
얼었던 사랑이 이젠 주위로 흘렀으면 해
I wish that the love that was frozen would flow around us now.

맘속에 찾아온 어둠을 그대로 두고
Leaving the darkness that crept into your alone
밤을 덮은 차가운 그림자마냥 굳어간다
and freezing like the cold shadows that cover the night.

얼음들이 녹아지면
If the gets melted
조금 더 따뜻한 노래가 나올텐데
a song that was a little more warmer would be able to come out.
얼음들은 왜 그렇게 차가울까
Why is the ice so cold?
차가울까요
Why are you so cold?

얼음들이 녹아지면
If the ice gets melted
조금 더 따뜻한 노래가 나올텐데
a song that was a little warmer would be able to come out
얼음들은 왜 그렇게 차가울까
Why is the ice so cold?
차가울까요
Why are you so cold?

Why are they so cold
Why are they so cold
Why are they so cold
Why are they so cold

**

1. I’m not sure what the subject of this sentence is. The main idea is the darkness is forming in one’s heart but no one is doing anything about it. So the subject could be “I” which would mean “I notice the darkness creeping in my heart and I let it be and I freeze/harden/stiffen..” or it could be “They/ice/adults”. Ice freezes and seems to be the metaphor for “adults” in this song so that could be a possibility.
You could translate it as “Why are they so cold” but when you are asking yourself a question you don’t use formal speech and the whole song is in banmal up until they say “차울까요?” so it seems like they are asking someone else a question that someone being the ice or “the adults” if that’s their intended meaning with 얼음.

Translation Practice: Mad Clown Feat Hyorin 견딜만해 (Without You)

I’m starting to get obsessed with this song. It has a similar feel to 착해 빠졌어 (Stupid in love). 착해 빠졌어 is more about guilt surrounding wanting to break up with someone and then being made to feel even more guilty because they are so nice/kind to the point of being foolish and wishing that they would be meaner or yell at you or something so that you would feel justified in leaving. 견딜만해 means hat something is endurable or tolerable.

The word 견딜만해 is a combination of the word 견디다 which means to endure and the grammar form 을 만하다.
을 만하다 has various usages. It can mean something is worth doing and it can also mean something can be done with relative ease but that it’s not an ideal situation.
ex. 그 읽을 만한 책이다. That book is worth reading.
상을 받을 만한 가수들이 많은데 그룹이 받았다니 말도 안 돼요.
There are a lot of artists worthy of (worth receiving) awards but it went to that group. I just don’t get. (I guess if you’re trying to throw shade lol)

In this song, Mad Clown talks about how the pain he feels from his break up is endurable because he didn’t allow himself to love the other person fully. Personally, I feel like Mad Clown has the perfect voice and flow for rapping. It seems like he feels each word which works well to convey the story embedded in the lyrics.

402호 빈집 불 꺼졌네
House No. 402 is empty and the lights are off.
온몸이 터널 같아 허전해
My whole body is like a tunnel. Empty.
밤은 낮을 걷어내고 비가 내린 것 같지는 않은데 내 눈가 어? 젖었네
The night wipes away the day. I don’t think it rained but oh? My eyes are wet
똑똑 넌 여기 없는 것 같아 조심스레 현관문 열고 들어간 다음
Knock Knock I don’t think you’re here. Afer I open the front door carefully and walk in
안쪽에서 문을 잠그네 철컥 너를 떠나 보내는 소리 철컥
I lock the door from the inside. Clink. That’s the sound of me letting you go. Clink.
니가 나간 추억이란 방 홀로 남아 니 멋대로 어질러놓은 기억들을 난 담아
I stand alone this room that is memory of your departure
I stuff then inside there, the memories you messed up to your liking.
떠나가는 입장과 떠나 보내는 입장은 항상 달라 둘은 전혀 다른 심장
The persons leaving and the person letting someone go are completely different. The feelings are completely different.
니가 뭘 알아 너만 편한 거짓말로 날 계속 아프게 하지마
What do you know? Don’t keep hurting me with those lies that only make you feel okay.
그래 넌 돌아서서 가 사랑했으니까 넌 다치지 않을 만큼만**
Alright. Go ahead and turn around and go because I loved you just enough that I wouldn’t get hurt
날 옆에 둔거니까 니가 외롭지 않을 만큼만
Because you only had me by your side, only so you wouldn’t be lonely.

** It’s kind of hard to translate this point because if it’s 사랑했으니까. 넌 다치지 안을 만큼만. (Because I loved you. Just enough that you wouldn’t get hurt.)

it it feels like he’s saying that he made it so that she could leave him without being hurt too much and also he didn’t giver her his full heart and he didn’t let her love him or become so attached to him so that she wouldn’t be completely torn apart when they broke up.

But if it’s 사랑했으니까 넌. (내가) 다치지 않을 만큼만( Because I loved you. Just enough that I wouldn’t get hurt)
It would mean that regardless of how she felt about him he had his guard up and he didn’t want to fall to deep so it wouldn’t hurt him. I chose the latter one because the it makes sense with the title and it would make sense for someone who has fear of abandonment or is just rather pessimistic about things would not wholeheartedly dedicate themselves into something because they know nothing lasts forever hence when it’s over letting it go becomes that much easier.

견딜만해 지낼만해
I can get over it I can get pass this
어차피 다치지 않을 만큼
사랑했으니까
Because I only loved you just enough that it wouldn’t hurt me anyway.
But I still love you
참을만해 말하지만
I say that it’s tolerable but
자존심 땜에 하지 못한 말
these words I couldn’t say because my pride was in the way
헤어지지 말자
I don’t want us to break up
Cuz I still love you
다 거짓말 I’m fine 다 거짓말 I’m fine
It was all a lie I’m it’s a lie I’m fine
Even without you
Even without you

견딜만해 괜찮아 생각보다 견딜만해 내 삶에 니가 없어도
This is tolerable. It’s okay. Even more than I thought it would be . I can endure even when you’re gone from my life.
친절하지 못했던 이별의 방식이었지만 걱정 마 견딜만해 난 보기보다
There was no way our separation could have been sweet but don’t worry I can deal with it. I’m stronger than I look.
빨랠 돌리다 티비를 켜 잠시 멍 때리다 책상에 앉아 책을 펴 밥을 먹어
I do the laundry and then turn on the tv then I blank out and sit on the desk and open a book and eat.
니가 빠져버린 내 일상 별로 달라진 건 없어 사랑했거든 넌 다치지 않을 만큼만
Since you left my rountine hasn’t changed a bit because I loved you just enough that so I wouldn’t get hurt.
나 이별을 똑바로 마주보는 법 몰라서 슬픔 앞에 고슴도치마냥 웅크렸어
Because I didn’t know how to face our separation head on I just crouched down in sadness and hid like a hedgehog
아닌 척 정말로 나 노력하고 있지만 숨을 안 쉬는 것 빼곤 별 짓 다해봐도 아퍼
I’m really trying to act like i’m not in pain but everything I do besides holding my breath hurts me
언젠가 사랑을 잃었을 때 다시는 그러지 않겠다 가슴에 아프게 새긴 노랫말
Last time when I let love get away from me I said I would never be this way again and I had these lyrics engraved painfully on my chest
미련을 추하다 여기지 말 것 또 기꺼이 아파하고 마음껏 울을 것
I won’t make attachment into something ugly
I will accept pain willingly and cry all I need to

견딜만해 지낼만해
어차피 다치지 않을 만큼
사랑했으니까
But I still love you
참을만해 말하지만
자존심 땜에 하지 못한 말
헤어지지 말자
Cuz I still love you

서로의 마음 각도기처럼 재곤 했던 우린 결국
We used measure our feelings for each like you would use a protractor
딱 그만큼의 사랑 딱 그만큼의 집
In the end there was exactly this much love and this many points
쉴 곳도 돼주지 못한 채 서로를 가두기 바빴고
Unable to become a place of refuge for each each other we were too busy shutting ourselves away from each other
보금자리가 돼주기보다 문을 굳게 닫은 창고
It was more like a locked garage rather than a home
추억은 빈집에 갇히고 우린 여기 다신 안 와
The memories are trapped in this empty house and we won’t come back here again.
한가지 확실한 건 그런 감정 이제는 다신 안 와
The one thing I’m know for sure is that I won’t ever feel this way again.
잘 지내 내 모든 맘으로 널 그리워해
How are you? I miss you with every piece of my heart.
사랑은 갇히고 난 바깥에서 문을 잠그네 빈집
I’m locking the door from outside of this empty house with the love trapped inside.

너 들리니 거기 있니
Can you hear me? Are you there?
더 많이 안아주지 못한 나
I’m sorry
For not being able to hold you any longer
이기적이던 나 정말 미안해
For being so selfish.
이별 앞에서 너 앞에서
When it came time to say goodbye, in front of you
자존심 땜에 하지 못한 말
These are the words I couldn’t say
헤어지지 말자
I don’t want us to break up
Cuz I still love you
다 거짓말 I’m fine 다 거짓말 I’m fine
Even without you
Even without you

Korean Through Music : Rose Part 2

지금은 아름답겠지만

지금-now 은 there is an emphasis on the now to
show things could change later

아름답다- beautiful

special conjugation rule for verbs ending
in ㅂ: ㅂ turns into 우 before vowels so
any 은/을 conjugation.
because it’s a vowel ending it will be 아름다

before 아/어 verb conjugations it would be
우 +어 so 워
아름다워. 맵다-spicy-> 매워. 덥다-hot(weather,)-> 더워. 춥다-cold(weather)->
추워

겠-expresses intention, or expectation of what’s
going to happen, personal interpretation or
assumption of someone else’s feelings or
experiences

Ex: You see someone fall off their bike you
might say “아프겠다” meaning “that must hurt”
or “that’s got to hurt”.

지만-attached to the end of verbs to express the
meaning of but, however. The second clause
will contradict or show opposition to the first
clause. No special conjugation just drop the
dictionary form 다 and add 지만

Korean Through Music : Rose Part 1

image

Hi everyone! To help everyone in there Korean learning journeys I’ve decided to breakdown kpop lyrics.
Take note that I am not a native speaker of Korean so I may miss some nuances but that being said I will try to explain to the best of my ability.

So let’s get started. The song Ill breakdown is Rose by Lee HaYi. I chose this song because the lyrics are simple but still beautiful.

Part 1:

So the first line is “ 사랑은 새빨간 rose” .
Grammar:This sentence is the basic Noun A=Noun B pattern. Noun A/ or  / = Noun B이다
So when you what to say something like “That is a pencil” or “This is a hat”. This is the form to use.
Step 1: Choose your noun(s)
I’m going to choose 이게 which means this and 시계 which means clock.

Step 2: Add your subject marker/
In most cases you would use if the word ends in a vowel and if it ends in a consonant. In this case 이게 is a contraction of the word 이것(this) + = 이것이—>이게. So when you see 이게 just know that it comes packaged with a marker ^^.

Step 3: Add the 이다 verb
이다 is the to be verb. It is attached to the end of nouns to show that that noun “is such and such”.
When you conjugate it to the polite informal form it is 이에요 for nouns ending in consonants and 예요 for those that end in vowels.
Ex. So we have 이게 시계예요 or 이것이 시계예요—>This is a clock.
In Korean, when the subject is known or implied it is often excluded completely. So one could just say 시계예요 to mean the same thing stated above.

When you want to say something is not something else you have use the verb 아니다. The polite informal for is  아니에요. Not 아니예요 or 아니요(This one means “no” as in a response to a question).

Be careful of the sentence structure.
Its Noun A/ or/ Noun B/ or / 아니다. So the subject noun has to have a marker after it as well as the noun that you are using to describe/identify that noun.
이게 시계가 아니에요 or  이것이 시계가 아니에요 or 시계가 아니에요

In the lyrics the sentence does not end in 이다 but it’s implied.

-contraction of the noun meaning I or me and the particle .
shows that the following word is owned by the noun preceding
나의 친구-My friend
인피니트의 매력 Infinite’s charm, the charm of Infinite
      친구-friend
매력-charm, attraction
Verb stem+//  + noun- way to modify or describe nouns.
This form is basically used to turn verbs into adjectives to describe the actions or the properties of a given noun.
/ is used for adjective verbs while is for action verbs
when the adjective ends in a consonant like 다-small
You take off다 and add 은 and it becomes 작은.
o Then you can add noun like개-dog
작은 – small dog,
받은 선물 the present I received,
받다-to receive, accept
선물present,gift
when it ends in a vowel
슬프다 sad
노래-song
    슬픈 노래-sad song
In the lyrics, you see 새빨갛다 when is at the end then it is removed we are left with just  so just add . Note this is a special conjugation rule forand there are exceptions like 좋다 which would be 좋은.
운동하다-to exercise
사람-person
운동하는 사람– the person who is exercising, the person who exercises, a person who exercises
보다-to see, watch, look
영화-movie
보는 영화 the movie I am watching , the movies I watch
/ topic markers, show contrast,
These markers can be tricky. They are mostly used to show emphasis like 사람이 학생이에요.하지만 저는 아니에요That person/she/he is a student but Im not.
학생-student
사람– person

The in the lyrics may give off the meaning that her love in contrast to someone else’s is like a rose. Following along with the lyrics of the song, her love will hurt you so it may be better to just find someone else or just leave her alone.

Vocabulary:
사랑-love
새빨갛다-scarlet red
Conjugation: 새빨개요.

Translation :
My love is a scarlet rose

Manhwa Recommendations

Today I’m going to introduce some of my favorite manhwa that I am reading or have finished.  Reading manwha is a good way to practice reading Korean as well as seeing how vocabulary and grammar are used in spoken form. A lot of people are turned off by the drawing of some manhwa but I’ve found some that are well drawn on top of having a great story.

image

The first one is called 다정한 겨울 or A Friendly Winter.  This is a sweet story of a seemingly young girl and a teen boy who meet, become friends and experience the ups and downs of life in a slightly unique way. This is the first manhwa I finished.  The story is really touching. Hands down my favorite

image

One of the manhwa I’m currently reading is called 괴물 같은 아이돌 . Its English title is “Like a Monster”. Hong Choi’s dream is to become a celebrity stylist but after a run-in with a bad manager she runs into the dressing room of the most popular boy group in the country to discover that they aren’t quite what they seem. This is definitely a must read for all the fan girls out there.

Watch what happens when Korea’s most prestigious school gets taken over by a terrorist group in 글로리 힐 or Glory Hill. If anyone likes the 999/Zero Escape games you will enjoy this.

Listening Practice With Infinite’s Sunggyu

This is Sunggyu’s hidden track from Infinite’s mini album “Infinitize”. I managed to transcribe this one for the most part. I want to do the other member’s tracks as well but some of them speak kind of fast or use a lot of words I don’t know.

Vocabulary:
대장: Leader, boss, captain, general
부끄럽다: Shy, embarrassed
존경하다: To respect
존재하다: To exlist
든든하다: Reassuring, secure

첫 시작

안녕하세요, 저는 Brittany입니다. 이 블로그로 한국어를 공부하고 다른 한국어를 배우는 사람들을 도와주려고 합니다.  오랫동안 약 2005-2006부터, 한국 음악을 좋아했는데 2011년 9월까지는 제대로 공부하지 않았습니다. 그때 대학교에서 초급 한국어 수업을 처음으로 들었고 그 당시에 Talk To Me In Korean를 사용했습니다.

Hi I’m Brittany. I just want to use this blog to further my Korean studies and communicate with other learners. I’ve been studying it for almost 2 years now. I have taken some classes at college but since there is so little in class time I like to study on my own.

I became fascinated with Korean after listening to kpop for a long time; since 2005-06. (btw my favorite group is Infinite) I did learn hangul back then so I could sing along but I didn’t learn basic grammar until I got to college. Back then I thought I would just wait until I got to college before I learned Korean because my high didn’t offer any languages but now that I’m taking classes I actually learn more on my own orz.

So yeah basically if you want to learn a language don’t wait until you feel like the time is ‘right’ just do it and have some fun while you’re at it.
